FOCUS GROUPS

During 2014 and 2015, the Chronic Disease Prevention Council conducted three focus groups in rural community throughout New Mexico with health councils in Las Vegas and Las Cruces, and with Navajo Community Health Workers in Gallup. These facilitated community discussions examined chronic disease burdens and resources available in these communities. Information gathered will be used to tailor future programs better to rural needs.

The purpose of these focus groups were:

•Information gathering and awareness building
•Increase community engagement, understand rural community chronic disease needs
•Get a sense of perceived burden of chronic disease from community leaders to integrate in future planning
•Give communities information to use: plan, resource list, and focus group information
•Disseminate and educate about New Mexico Shared Strategic Plan for Prevention and Control of Chronic Disease (NMSSP)
